Overview
Set in a parallel timeline to the traditional Holy Grail War, Fate/Apocrypha explores a world where the Greater Grail was stolen from Fuyuki City during the Third Holy Grail War. Decades later, the Yggdmillennia clan, led by the ambitious Darnic Prestone Yggdmillennia, declares their independence from the Mages' Association, revealing they possess the legendary relic in the city of Trifas, Romania. This defiance triggers a massive conflict known as the Great Holy Grail War, a catastrophic clash of power that deviates from the standard seven-master system. Instead, two opposing factions are formed: the Black Faction, representing Yggdmillennia, and the Red Faction, sent by the Mages' Association to reclaim the artifact.
The scale of this war is unprecedented, involving fourteen Heroic Spirits—seven for each side—monitored by a neutral fourteenth Servant of the Ruler class. The atmosphere is steeped in Dark Fantasy and Tragedy, as the series delves into the philosophical definitions of humanity, the weight of historical legacies, and the brutal cost of pursuing a miracle. Within this chaotic landscape, the story focuses on the intersection of legendary heroes like Siegfried, Karna, and Mordred, alongside a fragile homunculus who seeks his own purpose in a world determined to treat him as a mere tool for mana. The narrative is defined by high-octane action sequences, intricate magical systems, and the inevitable sorrow that follows those who gamble their souls for the sake of a wish-granting cup.
Synopsis
The story begins as the Yggdmillennia clan summons seven Servants to defend their fortress in Romania, while the Mages' Association commissions seven masters to counter them. However, the Red Faction is secretly manipulated by Shirou Kotomine, a priest with a hidden identity who seeks to seize the Grail for his own grand design. Amidst the brewing conflict, a nameless homunculus created as a battery for the Black Faction escapes his tank. He is rescued by the selfless Astolfo and later saved by the heroic sacrifice of Siegfried, the Saber of Black, who gives the boy his own heart. Reborn and named Sieg, the youth finds himself protected by the Ruler of the war, Jeanne d'Arc, who has been summoned by the Grail itself to ensure the integrity of the ritual.
As the war progresses, the lines between the factions blur. Shirou Kotomine is revealed to be Amakusa Shirou Tokisada, a survivor of a previous Grail War who intends to use the Greater Grail to grant Salvation to all of humanity by turning every soul into an immortal, spiritual existence. While his goal sounds noble, it would effectively strip humanity of its progress and free will. The conflict shifts from a battle between two factions to a desperate struggle against Shirou’s plan. Iconic battles erupt, such as the tragic duel between Chiron and Achilles, and the earth-shattering confrontation between Karna and Sieg, who temporarily transforms into the dragon-slayer Siegfried.
In the final assault on the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, many Servants fall in displays of immense power and heartbreaking sacrifice. Mordred and her master, Sisigou, perish after a mutual display of trust, while Jeanne d'Arc leads the charge toward the heart of the Grail. In the climax, Sieg faces off against Shirou in a battle of ideologies. Though Shirou is defeated, the Grail is already activated. To prevent the forced transformation of humanity, Sieg makes the ultimate choice: he uses his remaining power to transform into the dragon Fafnir and carries the Greater Grail to the Reverse Side of the World, a realm separate from human reality. There, he remains in eternal isolation to ensure the Grail can never harm humanity again, leaving Jeanne d'Arc to find a way to reunite with him in the distant afterlife, marking a bittersweet end to a war defined by blood and light.
