Overview

Fate/stay night [Heaven's Feel] II. lost butterfly is a 2019 Japanese animated fantasy film and the second installment in a cinematic trilogy produced by Ufotable. Directed by Tomonori Sudō, this film continues the adaptation of the third and final route of the visual novel Fate/stay night. While previous adaptations focused on more traditional heroic narratives, the Heaven's Feel trilogy dives deep into a darker, more psychological, and tragic exploration of the Holy Grail War. The film is widely celebrated for its breathtaking animation quality, featuring complex digital effects and fluid action sequences that set a high standard for the industry.
The story centers on the intensifying relationship between the protagonist, Shirou Emiya, and his classmate, Sakura Matou. As the supernatural conflict known as the Holy Grail War escalates, the atmospheric tone shifts from a battle of ideals to a desperate struggle for survival and redemption. The film explores themes of trauma, sacrifice, and the heavy consequences of choosing a single person over the greater good. With a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack composed by Yuki Kajiura, the movie creates a sense of dread and intimacy that distinguishes it from other entries in the franchise.
Key characters return with significantly more depth, including the mysterious Zouken Matou, the formidable Saber Alter, and the tragic Sakura Matou, whose past and inner turmoil become the emotional core of the narrative. The film successfully balances intense, high-stakes supernatural combat with quiet, character-driven moments, leading to a pivotal turning point that changes the fate of the city of Fuyuki. As the "lost butterfly" of the title suggests, the movie follows the fragile and chaotic transformation of its characters amidst a world falling into shadow.

Synopsis

The story picks up immediately after the devastating events of the first film, with Shirou Emiya having lost his servant, Saber, to a mysterious shadow. Despite his inability to fight as a Master, Shirou refuses to abandon his involvement in the Holy Grail War, primarily because of his growing concern for Sakura Matou. Sakura’s health begins to rapidly deteriorate as she suffers from a mysterious illness linked to her family’s dark magical heritage. Shirou discovers that Zouken Matou, the patriarch of the Matou family, is manipulating the war from the shadows and that Sakura is central to his malevolent plans.
As the shadow continues to consume both citizens and servants throughout Fuyuki City, Rin Tohsaka and Archer form a tenuous alliance with Shirou to stop the threat. However, the situation grows more dire when Saber reappears as Saber Alter, a corrupted and significantly more powerful version of Shirou's former guardian, serving the shadow. During a brutal confrontation at the Einzbern castle, Berserker is defeated by Saber Alter and consumed by the darkness, further increasing the shadow's power.
Amidst the violence, the emotional core of the film focuses on Shirou's internal conflict. He has always aspired to be a "hero of justice" who saves everyone, but he realizes that to save Sakura, he must abandon that ideal and protect her even if she becomes a threat to others. This decision marks a major departure from his character in other timelines.
The climax of the film occurs when Sakura’s brother, Shinji Matou, attempts to blackmail her, leading to a breaking point where Sakura's suppressed trauma and the influence of the shadow erupt. In a moment of tragic self-defense, Sakura kills Shinji and is fully consumed by the dark force within her. She transforms into a powerful and vengeful entity, losing her grasp on her humanity. The film concludes with Sakura walking into the darkness as the ultimate antagonist of the war, leaving Shirou and his allies with the impossible task of stopping her while trying to save what remains of her soul.
