Synopsis

The story begins as Jogoro Kobato and Yuki Osanai enter Funado High School, determined to leave their troubled middle school reputations behind. Jogoro, possessing an incredibly sharp analytical mind, previously alienated others by constantly solving their secrets, while Yuki, harboring a fierce and vindictive streak, often went to extremes to exact revenge on those who wronged her. Together, they establish a "reciprocal relationship" to act as a shield for one another, pretending to be mundane, unassertive students. However, their resolve is immediately tested when Jogoro's childhood friend, the boisterous Kengo Dojima, constantly tries to drag Jogoro into solving school mysteries, such as a missing pouch containing a student's art project.

As the spring semester progresses, the duo finds themselves entangled in minor puzzles. When Yuki's beloved strawberry tart is stolen from her bicycle basket, Jogoro is forced to use his deductive skills to track down the culprit without revealing his intellectual prowess to the school at large. Other seemingly trivial incidents, like a mysterious cup of hot chocolate and a locked-room classroom puzzle, require Jogoro's quiet intervention. Throughout these events, Jogoro and Yuki constantly remind each other of their pact, using the metaphor of the "shoshimin" to suppress their natural instincts.

Desperate to save his partner, Jogoro is forced to abandon his facade of ordinariness.
