Overview
The Attack on Titan OAD (Original Animation DVD) series consists of several special episodes released alongside limited-edition volumes of Hajime Isayama’s manga. Produced primarily by WIT Studio, these bonus episodes expand upon the main storyline of Shingeki no Kyojin by exploring side narratives, character backstories, and untold events occurring throughout different timelines of the series. Unlike the main television seasons that focus heavily on large-scale Titan battles and the mystery surrounding humanity’s survival, the OAD episodes provide a more intimate and narrative-driven perspective on beloved characters such as Levi Ackerman, Mikasa Ackerman, Annie Leonhart, and the members of the 104th Training Corps. Through diverse storytelling approaches—ranging from action-packed missions to comedic training mishaps and emotional flashbacks—the OAD collection enriches the overall lore of the Attack on Titan universe while maintaining the franchise’s signature intense atmosphere and cinematic animation style.
Synopsis
The Attack on Titan OAD episodes present several standalone stories that occur before, during, and between major events of the main series. In “Ilse’s Notebook: Notes from a Scout Regiment Member”, a mysterious notebook discovered outside the walls reveals a terrifying encounter between a Scout and an unusually intelligent Titan, hinting at deeper secrets about Titan behavior. Another storyline, “A Sudden Visitor: The Torturous Curse of Youth”, takes a rare comedic turn as the cadets of the 104th Training Corps participate in a chaotic cooking contest judged by Commander Pyxis. Meanwhile, “Distress” focuses on a survival exercise that quickly escalates into a real-life emergency when the cadets must protect civilians from bandits without proper military support. The OAD arc “No Regrets” delves into the dark past of Captain Levi, chronicling his origins in the underground city and the circumstances that eventually lead him to join the Survey Corps under Erwin Smith’s command. Lastly, “Lost Girls” explores the inner worlds of Annie Leonhart and Mikasa Ackerman through psychological and emotional side stories that reveal hidden aspects of their personalities. Together, these episodes deepen the narrative universe of Attack on Titan, offering fans additional context and character development beyond the primary storyline.
