Overview

After School Dice Club, known in Japan as Houkago Saikoro Club, is a slice-of-life anime series produced by LIDENFILMS, the studio famous for Tokyo Revengers and The Heroic Legend of Arslan. Directed by Kenichi Imaizumi, the twelve-episode first season originally aired during the Fall 2019 season. Based on the manga by Hirō Nakamichi, the production focuses on the 'Board Game Club Foundation' arc, depicting the formation of a core friendship group centered around a specialized hobby. The series stands out for its collaboration with real-world tabletop game publishers, featuring authentic games like Marrakech, Cockroach Poker, and Ladies and Gentlemen. Set in the scenic city of Kyoto, the show provides a wholesome yet educational look into the world of analog gaming, blending character development with genuine strategy explanations. It successfully captures the mid-2010s hobbyist resurgence, making it a definitive 'edutainment' entry within the CGDCT (Cute Girls Doing Cute Things) subgenre.

Synopsis

Miki Takekasa is a shy, socially withdrawn high school student living in Kyoto who struggles to find her place in the world. Her solitary life takes a dramatic turn when she meets Aya Takayaki, an energetic transfer student who encourages her to step out of her comfort zone. Their lives intersect with Midori Ohno, the diligent and serious class representative who works part-time at a local tabletop specialty shop called 'Saikoro Club.' Driven by Midori’s passion, the trio begins spending their afternoons exploring the vast and tactical world of international board games. The narrative follows their growth as they move from simple card games to complex strategy simulations, eventually forming their own unofficial after-school club. The primary conflict stems from Miki’s internal struggle to overcome her social anxiety and find a 'dream' worth pursuing. Throughout the season, they are joined by the German-Japanese student Emilia, who brings her own competitive spirit to the table. By engaging in these games, the girls learn valuable life lessons about sportsmanship, empathy, and communication, transforming their casual hobby into a profound bond that helps them navigate the complexities of adolescence and personal identity.
