Overview
Zatsu Tabi That’s Journey Season 1 is a heartwarming and scenic anime adaptation of Kaho Yasuhara's popular slice-of-life manga. Blending the tranquil charm of travelogues with the relatable struggles of a young creative, the series follows an aspiring manga artist who embarks on unplanned journeys across Japan to escape her professional anxieties. Unlike traditional travel shows, this adventure is driven by the whims of social media, making each destination a surprise for both the protagonist and the audience. With its beautiful depictions of real-world Japanese locales, mouth-watering local cuisine, and a soothing soundtrack, the show captures the essence of "iyashikei" (healing) anime. It stands as a love letter to the joy of wandering, the beauty of the countryside, and the unexpected connections made when one steps out of their comfort zone. Through its gentle pacing and relatable protagonist, the series offers a comforting escape for anyone who has ever felt stuck in life and yearned for a fresh start.
Synopsis
The story centers on Chika Suzugamori, a twenty-something aspiring manga artist who is reaching her breaking point. After receiving yet another harsh rejection letter from a publisher, Chika finds herself staring at a blank canvas, completely drained of inspiration and questioning her life choices. On a whim, she decides that she needs to run away—not forever, but just far enough to clear her mind. Lacking a concrete plan or destination, she turns to her social media account and posts a poll, asking her followers to choose where she should go.
This impulsive decision marks the beginning of her "zatsu tabi" (rough or unplanned journeys). Armed with a light backpack, a sketchbook, and her smartphone, Chika sets off to the destination chosen by her online audience. From hiking up misty mountain trails to visiting quiet seaside towns and historic shrines, Chika's travels are defined by their spontaneity. Along the way, she encounters a colorful cast of locals and fellow travelers who share their stories, regional delicacies, and wisdom with her. Each encounter and picturesque view slowly chips away at her creative block, helping her find beauty in the mundane and unexpected.
As the season progresses, Chika's social media following grows, and her polls become a collaborative bridge between her and her audience. She learns to embrace the mishaps of travel, such as missing trains, getting lost, and dealing with sudden weather changes, realizing that the journey itself is far more valuable than the destination. Through her sketches and newfound experiences, Chika begins to rebuild her confidence as an artist, transforming her random travels into the ultimate inspiration for her next manga project.
