Synopsis

The story begins in the wake of the Great War's conclusion. Violet Evergarden wakes up in a hospital, recovering from amputations that required her to be fitted with state-of-the-art prosthetic arms. She is visited by Claudia Hodgins, a former army commander and close friend of Major Gilbert Bougainvillea. Hodgins has promised Gilbert that he would look after Violet. He takes her to the bustling port city of Leiden, where he has established the CH Postal Company. Initially, Hodgins attempts to place Violet with the wealthy Evergarden family, but Violet, possessing a rigid, soldier-like demeanor, insists on working.

At the postal company, Violet witnesses the work of the Auto Memoir Dolls—women who write letters for clients who cannot write or struggle to express their feelings. When a client requests a letter and Violet hears the phrase "I love you," she recalls Gilbert saying those exact words to her before they were separated in the final battle at Intense. Desperate to comprehend the meaning of "I love you," Violet requests to become an Auto Memoir Doll.

Her training is difficult. Having been raised as a tool of war, Violet writes letters that read like cold, blunt military reports, often offending or confusing the recipients. She attends a training school for Dolls, where she initially fails to graduate due to her lack of empathy. However, after helping her classmate Luculia write a heartfelt, honest letter to her war-traumatized brother, Violet successfully conveys genuine emotion for the first time and earns her license.

As Violet travels across the continent to fulfill various writing commissions, she begins to heal and grow. She helps a young astronomer named Leon at the Shausteen Observatory, assists a princess in writing public love letters to secure a political marriage, and writes a final play for a grieving playwright who lost his daughter. Each encounter teaches Violet a different facet of human emotion, gradually softening her robotic exterior.

However, Violet remains unaware of Gilbert's true fate. While Hodgins and others know that Gilbert is missing and presumed dead, they keep this a secret to protect her fragile psyche. The truth eventually shatters Violet's world when she accidentally discovers that Gilbert was declared dead after the battle of Intense. Consumed by grief, guilt for the lives she took during the war, and the pain of losing her beloved commander, Violet falls into a deep depression and attempts to isolate herself, questioning whether she has the right to live and write letters when her hands have spilled so much blood.

With the support of her colleagues at CH Postal and the realization of how much comfort her letters have brought to others—particularly after writing a series of fifty letters for a terminally ill mother to be delivered to her daughter on her birthdays over the next fifty years—Violet decides to continue living. She accepts her past as a soldier while choosing to dedicate her future to bringing people together.

The climax of the season sees Violet traveling to a warzone to write a letter for a dying soldier, and later intervening to protect a peace treaty from anti-peace extremists who attempt to bomb a train. On the train, Violet faces her past head-on, refusing to kill her enemies and instead using her prosthetic arms to save lives, even losing them again in the process of disarming a bomb. Her actions secure the peace treaty, officially ending the war.

In the aftermath, Violet receives new prosthetics and writes a letter of her own—addressed to Major Gilbert. In the letter, she expresses her deep gratitude for everything he gave her, her acceptance of his absence, and her newfound understanding of what "I love you" truly means. The season concludes with Violet continuing her work as a highly respected Auto Memoir Doll, ready to meet her next client with a gentle smile.
