Overview
Himouto! Umaru-chan Season 1 (2015) is a vibrant slice-of-life comedy produced by Doga Kobo that centers on the hilarious duality of Umaru Doma. To the outside world, Umaru is the "ideal" high school girl—beautiful, athletic, and top of her class—but the moment she steps through her front door, she dons a hamster hoodie and transforms into a lazy, gaming-obsessed "himouto." The season follows her chaotic home life as she teases her hard-working older brother, Taihei, while juggling her secret "otaku" identity with her diverse group of friends: the shy Ebina, the socially awkward Kirie, and her self-proclaimed rival, Sylphynford. Blending pop-culture parodies with heartwarming sibling dynamics, the series explores the comfort of being one's true self behind closed doors.
Synopsis
Himouto! Umaru-chan follows the life of Umaru Doma, a high school girl who appears to be the perfect, graceful student to everyone she meets. However, the moment she returns home to her older brother Taihei, she dons a hamster hoodie and shrinks into a lazy, junk-food-loving "himouto" (a play on the words for "little sister" and "slob"). The story centers on her comedic struggle to maintain her flawless public image while indulging in her secret obsessions with video games, anime, and cola. As she navigates her double life, she forms genuine bonds with her classmates—the shy Ebina, the intimidating but misunderstood Kirie, and the hyper-competitive Sylphynford—all while pushing Taihei’s patience to its absolute limit with her endless demands and household antics.
