Synopsis
The story begins with Shirou Emiya, a high school student with a survivor's guilt stemming from a massive fire ten years prior. Despite his limited magical abilities, he is thrust into the Holy Grail War after accidentally summoning the Saber class Servant. He quickly forms an uneasy alliance with his classmate, Rin Tohsaka, and her cynical Servant, Archer. As they navigate the dangers of Fuyuki City, facing off against monstrous foes like Berserker and the treacherous Caster, the tension between Shirou’s naive idealism and Archer’s bitter pragmatism begins to boil over.
The narrative takes a dark and transformative turn when Archer’s true identity is revealed: he is a future version of Shirou Emiya who became a Counter Guardian, a soul destined to kill for eternity in the name of balance. Despising his past self for pursuing a path of selfless misery, Archer seeks to kill Shirou to create a paradox that might end his own existence. This leads to a climactic ideological and physical duel within the Unlimited Blade Works, a reality marble containing every sword the hero has ever seen. Shirou ultimately rejects Archer's despair, choosing to pursue his ideals even while acknowledging they may be a "beautiful lie."
Meanwhile, the ancient threat of Gilgamesh emerges, intending to use the corrupted Holy Grail to cleanse humanity. In the final confrontation at the Ryuudou Temple, Shirou utilizes his newly mastered projection magic to counter Gilgamesh’s infinite treasury, proving that a "fake" can surpass the original through sheer willpower. Saber destroys the physical manifestation of the Grail, sacrificing her chance at a wish to save the world.
The series concludes with the OVA: Sunny Day, an alternate epilogue where the tragedy is softened. In this version, through the combined magical energy of Rin and Shirou, Saber is able to remain in the world as a familiar. This ending provides a hopeful contrast to the standard resolution, showing a future where the trio can face the complexities of life together, free from the constraints of the war.
