Overview
Demon Lord, Retry! is an isekai fantasy series produced by studio EKACHI EPILKA, marking one of the studio's first major television projects. Based on the light novel series written by Kurone Kanzaki, the anime debuted during the Summer 2019 season. The production covers the initial Summoning and Holy Maiden arcs, focusing on the protagonist's arrival and the subsequent political ripple effects. Unlike many isekai titles that feature teenage protagonists, this series presents a more mature perspective through its lead character, Akira Ono. The context of the show blends dark fantasy elements with comedic subversions of the 'overpowered protagonist' trope. While the animation was noted for its modest budget, the series gained a dedicated following due to its unique kingdom-building elements and the charismatic, often misunderstood nature of its lead, who must navigate a world that views him as a legendary villain despite his pragmatic intentions.
Synopsis
The story centers on Akira Ono, an ordinary adult who has managed a long-running online game for fifteen years. His life changes forever when he is transported into the game's world as his own avatar: the formidable and intimidating Demon Lord, Hakuto Kunai. Immediately upon arrival, he rescues a young, mistreated girl named Aku, who becomes his loyal companion and guide. However, because he possesses the appearance and aura of the ultimate evil, he becomes a target for the country's religious factions and the Three Holy Maidens. The narrative follows Kunai as he utilizes his administrative game powers to summon powerful subordinates and build a base of operations, all while struggling to reconcile his modern Japanese sensibility with his terrifying persona. The primary conflict stems from the world's perception of him as a threat, forcing Kunai to navigate complex political landscapes and battle both literal monsters and corrupt humans. As he establishes a hospital and develops the land, he must maintain his 'Demon Lord' facade to survive while searching for a way back to his own world, inadvertently becoming a savior to the marginalized people he encounters along the way.
