Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Border 1: Ghost Pain introduces a younger, freelance Motoko Kusanagi before the formation of Section 9. During the mission, she is targeted by a sophisticated memory virus that causes her to question her own past and the motives of the 501 Organization, the unit that technically owns her prosthetic body. As she navigates a web of military corruption and "ghost hacking," she crosses paths with future teammates like Batou and Togusa. After uncovering the truth and securing her independence from the military, she accepts a proposal from Daisuke Aramaki to begin assembling her own specialized task force.
Synopsis
Ghost in the Shell: Arise is a four-part prequel series set in 2027 that explores the origins of Public Security Section 9. The story follows a younger Motoko Kusanagi, a highly skilled hacker and cyborg, as she breaks away from the military's 501 Organization to form her own specialized task force.
Border 1: Ghost Pain – Kusanagi investigates the murder of her former superior and a suspicious arms-dealing scandal. During the mission, she is infected with a memory virus that causes her to doubt her own past. She eventually uncovers corruption within her own unit, gains full ownership of her prosthetic body, and begins her partnership with Daisuke Aramaki.
Border 2: Ghost Whispers – Now a freelancer for Aramaki, Kusanagi must stop a team of former soldiers who have hacked the city’s traffic control AI to clear their leader of war crimes. This investigation leads her to confront Batou, a rival operative, and results in her recruiting future team members Ishikawa, Borma, Paz, and the sniper Saito.
Border 3: Ghost Tears – Kusanagi and her growing team hunt a terrorist cell using exploding prosthetics to carry out attacks. The case becomes personal when her boyfriend, a prosthetics specialist named Akira Hose, is implicated in the conspiracy. The film explores the mysterious "Fire-Starter" virus and concludes with Togusa being invited to join the unit.
Border 4: Ghost Stands Alone – Set during a massive riot in Newport City, the team tracks the creator of the Fire-Starter virus. Kusanagi encounters a unique cyborg girl named Emma and the hacker Scarecrow, whose ghosts have merged in a quest for autonomy. After a final battle against a prototype think-tank, the team is granted official "special authority," fully establishing Section 9.
