Overview
100 Meters (2025) is an animated sports drama film directed by Kenji Iwaisawa (ON-GAKU: Our Sound) and produced by studio Rock’n’Roll Mountain. Based on the acclaimed debut manga by Uoto, the creator of Orb: On the Movements of the Earth, the movie explores the psychological depth, raw intensity, and obsessive nature of elite competitive sprinting. Focused on the brief yet agonizing ten seconds of the 100-meter dash, the narrative examines the burdens of innate talent versus unyielding determination. Through a distinct visual aesthetic and grounded storytelling, 100 Meters captures the physical toll and existential pursuit of individuals who dedicate their entire lives to being the fastest on the track.
Synopsis
The narrative begins with Togashi, a young boy gifted with natural speed who easily wins every 100-meter race in elementary school without exerting much effort. Running is simple and rewarding for Togashi, who enjoys the praise that comes with his effortless victories. His perspective shifts with the arrival of Komiya, a transfer student who is clumsy and lacks fundamental technique, but possesses an extraordinary, fiery dedication to running.
Noticing Komiya's raw determination, Togashi decides to teach him proper sprinting posture and training methods. Komiya absorbs the guidance rapidly, transforming his chaotic energy into real speed. In teaching Komiya, Togashi unknowingly creates his greatest rival, setting off a complex dynamic that binds the two boys together across the years.
As both runners mature into high school and adulthood, their paths continue to intersect on the track, but their relationship evolves into a high-pressure dynamic. Togashi begins to suffer under the heavy burden of expectations, struggling with the fear of failure, physical degradation, and the looming threat of losing his status. Conversely, Komiya grows into a relentless competitor, consumed by an intense compulsion to surpass Togashi and push his body to its ultimate limit.
Their journey culminates at a high-stakes national championship race, where both sprinters align at the starting blocks once again. Facing severe mental anxiety, bodily injuries, and years of accumulated rivalry, Togashi and Komiya must confront what it truly means to devote their lives to a distance that takes only ten seconds to cross.
