Synopsis
The story begins with Iori Kitahara moving to the coastal town of Izu to live with his relatives. Upon entering the Grand Blue shop, he is shocked to find a group of half-naked, rowdy seniors—Shinji Tokita and Ryujiro Kotobuki—engaged in a wild party. Despite his desperate attempts to avoid their influence, Iori is essentially coerced into joining their diving club, Peek-a-Boo. Shortly after, he meets Kohei Imamura, a fellow student who initially wants a glamorous social life but is also tricked into the club's chaotic orbit. The two become inseparable rivals and friends, constantly pulling pranks on one another.
As the semester progresses, the narrative balances comedic school life with the technical aspects of diving. Iori, who was originally afraid of the water, begins to learn the basics under the guidance of his cousin Chisa, who is passionate and serious about the sport. The group participates in various university events, most notably the Izu Spring Festival, where Iori and Kohei end up in a ridiculous beauty pageant that results in public embarrassment but cements their status as the school's most notorious duo. Between the frantic social mixers and failed romantic pursuits, the club members study for their diving certification. A significant turning point occurs during their first real ocean dive, where the frantic comedy stops briefly to showcase the stunning, tranquil world beneath the waves, sparking a genuine passion for diving in Iori.
The season culminates in a highly anticipated trip to Okinawa for a multi-day diving expedition. Here, the stakes are raised as the characters must manage their limited funds and navigate the tensions of living in close quarters.
